Norwegian nature, folklore and mythology have always inspired Norwegian
artists to make pictures and sculptures that are so specifically
Norwegian that nobody can doubt their origins. The wood carver Henning
Engelson (born in 1918) started his career in 1947 in a small workshop
at Toten, Norway. Ever since the beginning his idea has been to create
a world of figures that radiate joy and humanity and inspire us to go up
above the ordinary. Each of his figures has its own character and
expresses parts of Norwegian soul and spirit. Henning carvings are very
collectible with all Scandinavian collectors. Since Minnesota is in the
heart of Scandinavia, we have access to all of these wonderful hand
carved pieces.
HENNING CARVING: TOR
Tor was next to Odin in rank. He protected people against natural
forces. Tor rode in a wagon drawn by two buck goats, causing thunder as
he crossed the sky. Tor had a hammer called Mjolner. This hammer
always hit the target which caused lightening and thunder and returned
automatically.
HENNING CARVING: MILK MAID
Milking was done in this fashion in Norway. The Milkmaid Milking Doe
carving has
changed since the original carving. Presently the milkmaid is a young
girl.

blending them with rosemaling. Her work has been on exhibition in the United
States and in Norway, and many of her commissioned works are in homes throughout
the country. Suzanne has
